Performing take off quantities is essential in interior design soft furnishing to accurately estimate the materials needed for projects such as curtains, upholstery, and decorative fabrics. Precise quantity take offs help control project costs, prevent waste, and ensure timely procurement. In Kenya, where interior design projects range from upscale hotels in Nairobi to county government offices in Kisumu, mastering material quantity calculations is critical for professional success.

6.1 Material quantities

Material quantity take off involves calculating the exact amount of fabric and related materials required for a furnishing project. This process requires understanding fabric widths, pattern repeats, and necessary allowances for seams and hems. Accurate measurement and calculation reduce material wastage and cost overruns in diverse Kenyan settings such as banks, schools, and retail outlets.

6.1.1 Calculating fabric length for curtains

Calculating the fabric length for curtains depends on the window size, curtain fullness, fabric width, and hems. The formula for fabric length includes the finished curtain length plus allowances for hems and heading.

$$ \text{Fabric length} = \text{Finished curtain length} + \text{Hem allowance} + \text{Heading allowance} $$

Worked Examples

Example 1:
Given: Finished curtain length = 2.0 m, Hem allowance = 0.2 m, Heading allowance = 0.15 m$$ \text{Fabric length} = 2.0 + 0.2 + 0.15 $$$$ = 2.35 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 2.35 m fabric length

Example 2:
Given: Finished curtain length = 2.5 m, Hem allowance = 0.25 m, Heading allowance = 0.2 m$$ \text{Fabric length} = 2.5 + 0.25 + 0.2 $$$$ = 2.95 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 2.95 m fabric length

Example 3:
Given: Finished curtain length = 3.0 m, Hem allowance = 0.3 m, Heading allowance = 0.25 m$$ \text{Fabric length} = 3.0 + 0.3 + 0.25 $$$$ = 3.55 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 3.55 m fabric length

Example 4:
Given: Finished curtain length = 2.8 m, Hem allowance = 0.2 m, Heading allowance = 0.3 m$$ \text{Fabric length} = 2.8 + 0.2 + 0.3 $$$$ = 3.3 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 3.3 m fabric length

Example 5:
Given: Finished curtain length = 3.2 m, Hem allowance = 0.25 m, Heading allowance = 0.35 m$$ \text{Fabric length} = 3.2 + 0.25 + 0.35 $$$$ = 3.8 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 3.8 m fabric length

6.1.2 Calculating fabric width based on fullness and window width

Fabric width needed depends on the window width and the fullness factor, which accounts for the desired curtain gathers or pleats. The formula is:

$$ \text{Fabric width} = \text{Window width} \times \text{Fullness factor} $$

Typical fullness factors range from 1.5 (light fullness) to 3.0 (heavy fullness).

Worked Examples

Example 1:
Given: Window width = 1.5 m, Fullness factor = 2.0$$ \text{Fabric width} = 1.5 \times 2.0 $$$$ = 3.0 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 3.0 m fabric width

Example 2:
Given: Window width = 2.0 m, Fullness factor = 2.5$$ \text{Fabric width} = 2.0 \times 2.5 $$$$ = 5.0 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 5.0 m fabric width

Example 3:
Given: Window width = 1.2 m, Fullness factor = 1.8$$ \text{Fabric width} = 1.2 \times 1.8 $$$$ = 2.16 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 2.16 m fabric width

Example 4:
Given: Window width = 1.8 m, Fullness factor = 3.0$$ \text{Fabric width} = 1.8 \times 3.0 $$$$ = 5.4 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 5.4 m fabric width

Example 5:
Given: Window width = 2.4 m, Fullness factor = 1.5$$ \text{Fabric width} = 2.4 \times 1.5 $$$$ = 3.6 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 3.6 m fabric width

6.1.3 Calculating fabric quantity for upholstery

Fabric quantity for upholstery depends on the size of the furniture piece, the number of cushions, and allowances for seams and pattern matching. The general formula is:

$$ \text{Fabric quantity} = \text{Furniture surface area} + \text{Seam allowance} + \text{Pattern repeat allowance} $$

Worked Examples

Example 1:
Given: Furniture surface area = 4.0 m², Seam allowance = 0.5 m², Pattern repeat allowance = 0.3 m²$$ \text{Fabric quantity} = 4.0 + 0.5 + 0.3 $$$$ = 4.8 \text{ m}^2 $$ Answer: 4.8 m² fabric quantity

Example 2:
Given: Furniture surface area = 5.5 m², Seam allowance = 0.7 m², Pattern repeat allowance = 0.4 m²$$ \text{Fabric quantity} = 5.5 + 0.7 + 0.4 $$$$ = 6.6 \text{ m}^2 $$ Answer: 6.6 m² fabric quantity

Example 3:
Given: Furniture surface area = 3.2 m², Seam allowance = 0.6 m², Pattern repeat allowance = 0.2 m²$$ \text{Fabric quantity} = 3.2 + 0.6 + 0.2 $$$$ = 4.0 \text{ m}^2 $$ Answer: 4.0 m² fabric quantity

Example 4:
Given: Furniture surface area = 6.0 m², Seam allowance = 0.8 m², Pattern repeat allowance = 0.5 m²$$ \text{Fabric quantity} = 6.0 + 0.8 + 0.5 $$$$ = 7.3 \text{ m}^2 $$ Answer: 7.3 m² fabric quantity

Example 5:
Given: Furniture surface area = 4.5 m², Seam allowance = 0.4 m², Pattern repeat allowance = 0.3 m²$$ \text{Fabric quantity} = 4.5 + 0.4 + 0.3 $$$$ = 5.2 \text{ m}^2 $$ Answer: 5.2 m² fabric quantity

6.1.4 Allowances for fabric wastage and pattern matching

Wastage allowance accounts for fabric lost during cutting, matching patterns, and errors. This is usually expressed as a percentage of the total fabric quantity. The formula to include wastage is:

$$ \text{Total fabric quantity} = \text{Calculated fabric quantity} \times (1 + \frac{\text{Wastage percentage}}{100}) $$

Worked Examples

Example 1:
Given: Calculated fabric quantity = 10 m, Wastage percentage = 10%$$ \text{Total fabric quantity} = 10 \times (1 + \frac{10}{100}) $$$$ = 10 \times 1.1 $$$$ = 11 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 11 m total fabric

Example 2:
Given: Calculated fabric quantity = 7.5 m, Wastage percentage = 15%$$ \text{Total fabric quantity} = 7.5 \times (1 + \frac{15}{100}) $$$$ = 7.5 \times 1.15 $$$$ = 8.625 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 8.625 m total fabric

Example 3:
Given: Calculated fabric quantity = 12 m, Wastage percentage = 8%$$ \text{Total fabric quantity} = 12 \times (1 + \frac{8}{100}) $$$$ = 12 \times 1.08 $$$$ = 12.96 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 12.96 m total fabric

Example 4:
Given: Calculated fabric quantity = 9 m, Wastage percentage = 12%$$ \text{Total fabric quantity} = 9 \times (1 + \frac{12}{100}) $$$$ = 9 \times 1.12 $$$$ = 10.08 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 10.08 m total fabric

Example 5:
Given: Calculated fabric quantity = 5 m, Wastage percentage = 20%$$ \text{Total fabric quantity} = 5 \times (1 + \frac{20}{100}) $$$$ = 5 \times 1.2 $$$$ = 6 \text{ m} $$ Answer: 6 m total fabric
