Mastering these skills will help you create beautiful, functional bathrooms that meet clients’ needs and stand the test of time!
Bathroom fittings and accessories are the fixed and movable items that make a bathroom usable, safe, hygienic and attractive. Fittings are the items connected to the water supply or drainage, or permanently fixed to the structure, such as taps, mixers, showers, valves, wastes and flush mechanisms, often installed with sanitary ware such as toilets, basins and bathtubs. Accessories are the supporting items that complete the room, such as towel rails, toilet roll holders, soap dishes, mirrors, shelves, robe hooks and grab bars. For interior designers, fittings and accessories are where function meets style: they affect water use, comfort, accessibility, cleaning and the overall look of the space. Example: in refurbishing guest bathrooms at a beach hotel, a designer specifies water-saving mixers and dual-flush cisterns, brushed brass towel rails and soap dispensers that resist the salty coastal air.
Understanding the terms used in the bathroom industry helps designers communicate clearly with clients, plumbers and suppliers. Example: a designer preparing a schedule for a private clinic's washrooms separates sanitary ware, fittings and accessories so the plumber and the joiner each know their scope.
Fittings and accessories differ in function, installation and the trades involved. Knowing the difference guides planning, budgeting and coordination. Example: a designer for a girls' boarding school dormitory block budgets separately for plumbing fittings installed during construction and accessories fixed after tiling.
| Feature | Fittings | Accessories |
|---|---|---|
| Main function | Supply, control and drain water | Support, store, hold and assist users |
| Connection | Connected to water supply or drainage | Usually not connected to plumbing |
| Installation stage | During plumbing first and second fix | After tiling and finishing |
| Trade responsible | Plumber | Fitter, carpenter or general installer |
| Examples | Taps, mixers, showers, cisterns, traps | Towel rails, toilet roll holders, mirrors, shelves |
| Effect of failure | Leaks, flooding and water waste | Loss of convenience or safety |
Interior designers plan how bathroom fittings and accessories work together to meet users' needs, the space available, the budget and the design concept. They coordinate with plumbers, suppliers and builders to make sure the selected items are installed correctly and at the right heights. Example: a designer working on a senior citizens' home places grab bars beside every toilet and shower and chooses lever taps that are easy for weak hands to use.
Bathrooms are planned in zones to keep wet areas, electrical items and storage safely and conveniently arranged. Considering zones early ensures fittings and accessories are placed where they work best. Example: a designer of shared washrooms at a polytechnic hostel separates the shower area from the basin zone with a glass screen so towels and toilet paper stay dry.
Percentage of budget = cost of item group ÷ total bathroom budget × 100
A bathroom refurbishment for a church manse costs Ksh 450,000. Fittings cost Ksh 108,000 and accessories cost Ksh 36,000.
Fittings share = 108,000 ÷ 450,000 × 100 = 24%
Accessories share = 36,000 ÷ 450,000 × 100 = 8%
Together, fittings and accessories take 32% of the budget.
