Mastering these skills will help you create beautiful, safe, and functional interior spaces that satisfy clients and stand the test of time!
Interior fixtures are integral to defining the aesthetic and functional quality of interior spaces. The process of installing these fixtures demands careful planning and execution to ensure they complement the overall design while meeting safety and usability standards. In the Kenyan interior design industry, site preparation is a critical initial phase that sets the foundation for successful fixture installation. Proper site preparation helps avoid costly reworks and ensures timely project completion, whether in commercial offices, hospitals, or hospitality environments.
Tools and equipment for installing furniture, fixtures, hardware and decorative accessories are the hand tools, power tools, measuring instruments, lifting aids and access equipment that installers use to set out, cut, drill, fix, level and finish work on site. Using the right tool for each task produces accurate, secure and neat installations, protects finished surfaces and keeps workers safe. A well-equipped installer also works faster, because time is not lost improvising or correcting mistakes. Example: an installation team fitting reception counters, wall shelves and signage at a microfinance branch carries a laser level, cordless drills, a mitre saw, furniture dollies and surface protection sheets, completing the fit-out over one weekend without damaging the new floor.
Measuring and setting-out tools are used to take dimensions, mark positions and transfer layouts from drawings to walls, floors and ceilings. Accurate setting out prevents misplaced holes, uneven spacing and furniture that does not fit.
| Name | Specification | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Steel tape measure | 5 m to 8 m, lockable, metric scale | Measuring rooms, walls and furniture |
| Laser distance meter | Measures up to 30 m to 100 m, accuracy about ±2 mm | Measuring long spaces quickly and accurately |
| Steel rule | 300 mm to 1,000 mm | Measuring and marking small components |
| Try square | 150 mm to 300 mm blade | Marking and checking right angles |
| Combination square | Adjustable blade with 45° and 90° faces | Marking angles and checking squareness |
| Pencil and marking tools | Carpenter's pencil, marker, scriber | Marking cut lines and fixing points |
| Chalk line | Reel with chalk powder, 15 m to 30 m line | Marking long straight lines on walls and floors |
| Stud and cable detector | Electronic detector for wood, metal and live wires | Locating studs, pipes and cables before drilling |
Four picture frames, each 0.45 m wide, are to be hung on a 3.0 m wall with equal gaps between the frames and at both ends.
Total width of frames = 4 × 0.45 = 1.8 m
Space left for gaps = 3.0 − 1.8 = 1.2 m
Number of gaps = number of frames + 1 = 5
Gap width = 1.2 ÷ 5
Answer: each gap is 0.24 m (240 mm)
Levelling and alignment tools ensure that shelves, cabinets, counters, curtain rails and artworks are horizontal, vertical and in line with each other. Work that is even slightly out of level is easily noticed and can cause doors to swing open or items to slide.
| Name | Specification | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Spirit level | 600 mm to 1,800 mm, horizontal and vertical vials | Checking that items are level and plumb |
| Torpedo level | About 230 mm, magnetic base | Levelling small items and working in tight spaces |
| Laser level | Self-levelling, cross-line or rotary, range 10 m to 30 m | Projecting level and plumb lines across a room |
| Plumb bob | Weighted bob on a string | Checking vertical alignment |
| Water level | Clear tube filled with water | Transferring levels over long distances or round corners |
| Name | Specification | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Hand saw | 500 mm to 550 mm, fine or general-purpose teeth | Cutting timber and boards |
| Hacksaw | 300 mm frame with replaceable blades | Cutting metal rails, pipes and brackets |
| Utility knife | Retractable blade | Trimming carpets, vinyl, packaging and wallpaper |
| Jigsaw | Corded or cordless, variable speed | Cutting curves and openings in boards |
| Circular saw | 165 mm to 235 mm blade | Making straight cuts in sheet materials |
| Mitre saw | 210 mm to 305 mm blade, angle settings | Cutting accurate angles for trims and frames |
| Tin snips | Straight or curved cut | Cutting thin metal sheets and trims |
| Name | Specification | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Cordless drill driver | 12 V to 18 V battery, variable speed and clutch | Drilling holes and driving screws |
| Hammer drill | Corded or cordless with hammer action | Drilling into brick and concrete |
| Impact driver | High-torque cordless tool | Driving long or large screws quickly |
| Drill bits | Wood, masonry, metal and tile bits in various sizes | Drilling holes in different materials |
| Screwdrivers | Flat and Phillips or Pozidriv heads, various sizes | Tightening and loosening screws by hand |
| Claw hammer | 450 g to 570 g head | Driving and removing nails |
| Rubber mallet | Rubber or nylon head | Assembling furniture without damaging surfaces |
| Spanners and Allen keys | Metric sets | Tightening bolts and assembling flat-pack furniture |
| Staple gun | Manual or electric | Fixing fabrics and light materials |
| Name | Specification | Use |
|---|---|---|
| G-clamps and quick-release clamps | 100 mm to 600 mm opening | Holding pieces while fixing or gluing |
| Pliers | Combination, long-nose and cutting pliers | Gripping, bending and cutting wire |
| Workbench or portable work stand | Folding, stable | Supporting work while cutting and assembling |
| Caulking gun | Standard cartridge size | Applying sealants and adhesives |
| Glue gun | Hot-melt, low and high temperature | Fixing light decorative items |
Furniture and fixtures are often heavy, bulky or fragile, so lifting and access equipment protects both workers and items. Example: installers moving filing cabinets into a county records office use a hand truck and furniture sliders instead of dragging the cabinets across the floor.
| Name | Specification | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture dolly | Flat platform with castor wheels, rated load | Moving heavy furniture across floors |
| Hand truck (sack truck) | Two-wheeled, rated load | Moving cabinets and boxed items |
| Furniture sliders | Felt or plastic pads | Sliding furniture without scratching floors |
| Lifting straps | Adjustable harness straps | Lifting heavy items with less strain |
| Step ladder | Aluminium or fibreglass, 3 to 8 steps, rated load | Reaching high fixing points |
| Mobile scaffold or platform | Lockable wheels, guard rails | Working safely at height for long periods |
| Name | Specification | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Sandpaper and sanding block | Various grit grades | Smoothing edges and preparing surfaces |
| Filling knife | 25 mm to 75 mm blade | Applying filler to holes and joints |
| Paint brushes and touch-up kits | Various sizes | Touching up paint and finishes after installation |
| Vacuum cleaner | Dust extraction or workshop vacuum | Removing drilling dust and debris |
| Surface protection sheets | Floor protection film, cardboard, dust sheets | Protecting floors and furniture during work |
