5.1 Introduction to paints.

Paint is a liquid or paste coating that is applied to a surface in a thin layer and dries or cures to form a solid, continuous film that protects and decorates the surface. In interior design, paint is the most widely used and economical finish, able to change the mood, colour, light quality and character of a space quickly, while also protecting walls, ceilings, timber and metal from moisture, dirt and wear. Understanding what paint is made of and what each ingredient does helps designers specify the right product, judge quality and avoid failures such as peeling, fading or poor coverage. Example: when refurbishing a children's ward, a designer specifies a washable, low-odour paint with good opacity so that bright colours stay clean, cover well in two coats and are safe for young patients.

Functions of paint

  • Protection: Shields surfaces from moisture, corrosion, rot, insects and wear.
  • Decoration: Adds colour, sheen and effects that create the desired atmosphere.
  • Hygiene: Provides smooth, washable surfaces that are easy to keep clean in kitchens, toilets and hospitals.
  • Light reflection: Light colours reflect daylight and artificial light, making rooms brighter and reducing lighting costs.
  • Identification and safety: Colours mark hazards, pipes, fire equipment and walkways.
  • Concealment: Hides minor surface defects, patches and stains.
  • Value addition: Fresh, well-chosen paintwork improves the appeal and value of a property.

Composition of paint

Component Description Function
Pigment Fine coloured or white powder, such as titanium dioxide or iron oxide Gives colour and opacity (hiding power)
Binder (vehicle) Resin such as acrylic, alkyd or vinyl Binds pigment particles together and makes the film stick to the surface
Solvent or thinner Water or mineral spirits Makes paint liquid for application and evaporates as paint dries
Extenders (fillers) Inert powders such as chalk, talc or clay Add body, control sheen and reduce cost
Additives Small amounts of special chemicals Improve flow, drying, mould resistance and shelf life

Properties of good-quality paint

  • Good opacity: Covers the surface and previous colour in few coats.
  • Good adhesion: Sticks firmly without flaking or peeling.
  • Durability: Resists fading, cracking, chalking and wear.
  • Washability: Can be cleaned without losing colour or sheen.
  • Easy application: Flows smoothly without brush marks, drips or spatter.
  • Reasonable drying time: Dries quickly enough to recoat without trapping defects.
  • Low odour and toxicity: Safe for occupants during and after application.

Paint sheen levels

Sheen level Appearance Typical interior use
Matt (flat) No shine, hides surface defects Ceilings and living areas
Eggshell Very low sheen Bedrooms and lounges
Satin Soft, low shine Corridors, children's rooms, offices
Semi-gloss Noticeable shine Kitchens, bathrooms, doors and trims
Gloss High shine, very washable Doors, frames, railings and metalwork

Common paint terms

  • Spreading rate: The area that one litre of paint covers, measured in square metres per litre.
  • Opacity: The ability of paint to hide the surface beneath it.
  • Drying time: The time paint takes to be touch dry and ready for recoating.
  • Viscosity: The thickness or flow of paint.
  • Coat: One layer of paint applied to a surface.
  • Primer and undercoat: Preparatory coats that seal surfaces and help top coats adhere and cover.

Safe handling and storage of paint

  • Store in a cool, dry place: Heat and moisture spoil paint and can create fire risks.
  • Close tins tightly: Prevents skinning, drying and spills.
  • Keep away from children and food: Prevents accidental poisoning.
  • Ventilate when painting: Open windows and doors to reduce fumes.
  • Dispose of waste responsibly: Do not pour paint or solvents into drains or soil.

Worked example: pigment volume concentration

Pigment volume concentration (PVC) = volume of pigment and extenders ÷ (volume of pigment and extenders + volume of binder) × 100

A paint factory's matt emulsion batch contains 30 litres of pigment and extenders and 45 litres of binder by volume.

PVC = 30 ÷ (30 + 45) × 100

PVC = 30 ÷ 75 × 100

PVC = 40%, a value typical of a mid-sheen interior paint, since higher PVC gives flatter, less washable finishes and lower PVC gives glossier, tougher ones
