Ruminant animal production is a vital component of Kenya’s agricultural sector, contributing significantly to food security, income generation, and rural livelihoods. Effective management of diseases in ruminants such as cattle, sheep, and goats is crucial to maintaining herd health and ensuring sustainable productivity. 4.1 Ruminant diseases

Ruminant diseases are a major challenge to livestock production in Kenya, causing economic losses through reduced growth rates, decreased milk yields, reproductive failures, and mortality. Disease management is a core responsibility of agricultural extension officers who work closely with farmers to prevent outbreaks and promote animal welfare. Understanding the types and causes of ruminant diseases helps in designing effective control strategies tailored to local farming systems.

4.1.1 Classification of ruminant diseases

Ruminant diseases can be classified based on their causative agents and transmission modes. This classification aids in diagnosis and informs appropriate treatment and control measures.

Infectious diseases

Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. These diseases are often contagious and can spread rapidly within herds. Examples include Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD), Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), and Trypanosomiasis.

Non-infectious diseases

Non-infectious diseases arise from nutritional imbalances, toxic substances, genetic factors, or environmental stress. These diseases are not contagious but can severely affect animal health and productivity. Examples include bloat, acidosis, and mineral deficiencies like copper or selenium deficiency.

Endemic diseases

Endemic diseases persist in a particular geographic area and affect a predictable proportion of the livestock population. In Kenya, diseases like East Coast Fever (ECF) and Helminthiasis are endemic in certain regions due to environmental and vector presence.

Epidemic diseases

Epidemic diseases occur suddenly and spread rapidly, causing widespread outbreaks. These often require urgent response to prevent large-scale livestock losses. The Rift Valley Fever outbreaks in Kenya illustrate the impact of epidemic diseases on ruminant populations.

4.1.2 Common bacterial diseases affecting ruminants in Kenya

Bacterial infections are frequently encountered in ruminant herds and can affect various body systems, necessitating prompt diagnosis and treatment.

Tuberculosis (TB)

Bovine tuberculosis, caused by Mycobacterium bovis, affects the lungs and lymph nodes leading to chronic respiratory illness and weight loss. It poses zoonotic risks, requiring control measures that include testing and culling infected animals.

Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP)

CBPP is a highly contagious respiratory disease characterized by pleural inflammation and lung consolidation. It results in coughing, labored breathing, and high mortality if untreated. Vaccination campaigns by county veterinary services are critical in controlling outbreaks.

Blackleg

Caused by Clostridium chauvoei, blackleg affects young cattle with sudden onset of swelling and lameness due to muscle necrosis. It is often fatal but preventable through annual vaccination programs.

Mastitis

Mastitis is an inflammation of the udder caused by bacterial infection, reducing milk production and quality. It is common in dairy farms such as those around Nakuru, where poor milking hygiene facilitates bacterial entry.

Anthrax

Anthrax caused by Bacillus anthracis leads to sudden death with bleeding from body orifices. It is a zoonotic disease controlled through vaccination and proper carcass disposal.

4.1.3 Viral diseases of ruminants

Viral diseases often cause rapid outbreaks with significant economic impact, requiring strict biosecurity and vaccination strategies.

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD)

FMD affects cloven-hoofed animals with fever, vesicular lesions on the tongue, feet, and teats, leading to lameness and reduced productivity. The Kenya Livestock Marketing Council enforces movement restrictions during outbreaks to contain spread.

Rift Valley Fever (RVF)

RVF is a mosquito-borne viral disease causing abortions, high mortality in young animals, and febrile illness. It also affects humans, making it a public health concern during rainy seasons in counties like Garissa.

Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR)

PPR affects goats and sheep causing fever, nasal discharge, diarrhea, and high mortality. It is a major constraint in pastoralist areas where mixed herding is common.

Bluetongue

Bluetongue virus causes fever, swelling of the face and tongue, and lameness. It is transmitted by biting midges and affects mainly sheep, with outbreaks reported in highland farms near Kericho.

Rabies

Rabies is a fatal neurological viral disease transmitted by bites, occasionally affecting ruminants. Vaccination of domestic animals by county veterinary departments prevents spillover infections in livestock.

4.1.4 Parasitic diseases impacting ruminant productivity

Parasites, both internal and external, compromise animal health by causing anemia, poor growth, and secondary infections.

Helminthiasis (worm infestations)

Helminths such as roundworms, tapeworms, and liver flukes infest the digestive system causing diarrhea, weight loss, and reduced feed efficiency. Strategic deworming programs during rainy seasons improve herd health in counties like Meru.

Trypanosomiasis (Nagana)

Transmitted by tsetse flies, trypanosomiasis causes fever, anemia, and emaciation. It limits livestock production in tsetse-infested areas such as parts of Western Kenya.

Ectoparasites (ticks, lice, mites)

Ticks transmit diseases like ECF and cause skin irritation leading to reduced grazing. Regular acaricide application is essential in managing tick populations in farms around Machakos.

Coccidiosis

This protozoan infection affects young animals causing diarrhea and stunted growth. Good sanitation in housing reduces incidence in dairy farms near Eldoret.

Liver Fluke (Fascioliasis)

Liver flukes damage liver tissue, leading to poor appetite and weight loss. Drainage of swampy pastures and use of flukicides are effective control measures in the Lake Victoria basin.
