Hair coloring is an essential skill in cosmetology, offering clients the opportunity to enhance their appearance, express individuality, or cover grey hair. In Kenya’s vibrant cosmetology industry, hair coloring services are in high demand across salons in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and beyond. Performing these services professionally requires thorough hair preparation, understanding of various coloring types, and mastery of appropriate application methods to ensure client satisfaction and hair health.

2.1 Hair Preparation

Proper hair preparation is the foundation of a successful hair colouring service. It ensures that the hair and scalp are in the best condition to receive colour, which affects the vibrancy, longevity and health of the final result. Clients arrive with different hair textures and conditions, so careful preparation tailored to each client's needs is critical for quality outcomes.

Shampooing and conditioning in hair colour

Shampooing and conditioning before a colour service remove dirt, sweat and styling products that would stop colour from taking evenly, and they restore the moisture the hair needs to cope with chemical processing. The aim is clean, balanced hair, not stripped hair: natural oils on the scalp offer some protection against irritation. Example: at a hotel spa, a stylist preparing a guest for a colour service uses a mild shampoo and a light conditioner on the lengths only, so the colour will take evenly without irritating the scalp.

  • Shampooing: Use a gentle, colour-safe shampoo to remove dirt, oil and styling products without stripping natural oils. Massage the scalp with the pads of the fingers, never the nails, to avoid scratches that colour could sting.
  • Water temperature: Use comfortably warm water. Water that is too hot irritates the scalp and can leave the hair rough.
  • Rinsing: Rinse thoroughly, because shampoo or product residue left on the hair can interfere with colour penetration.
  • Deep conditioning: For dry or damaged hair, apply a deep conditioner to the lengths and ends to restore moisture and elasticity before chemical processing. Keep it away from the roots if the colour is to be applied there.
  • Avoiding heavy products: Heavy conditioners, oils and serums create a barrier that blocks colour uptake, so use only light conditioning products at this stage and rinse them out fully.
  • Towel drying: Blot the hair gently with a clean towel to remove excess water. Follow the manufacturer's instructions on whether the colour is applied to damp or dry hair, because excess water dilutes the product.

Basing

Basing means applying a protective base, usually a barrier cream or a petroleum-jelly-based product, to the skin around the hairline, ears and nape before colour is applied. Colour products can stain the skin and irritate sensitive areas, so this layer acts as a shield. It should not be confused with the base colour, which is the natural depth of the client's hair. Example: a teacher booking a colour service before school reopens leaves the salon with clean hairline and ears, because the stylist based these areas before applying the colour.

Procedure for basing and protection:

  1. Gown the client in a protective cape and place a towel or neck strip around the neck so that colour cannot run onto clothing or skin.
  2. Inspect the scalp and hairline for cuts, sores, rashes or irritation. If the skin is broken or inflamed, do not proceed with the colour service.
  3. Wash your hands and put on gloves, which protect your own skin from colour chemicals and prevent contact dermatitis.
  4. Section the hair and clip it out of the way so that the hairline, ears and nape are fully visible.
  5. Apply a thin, even layer of barrier cream along the hairline, around the ears and across the nape, using a gloved finger or a tint brush.
  6. Keep the cream off the hair strands that are to be coloured, because it would block the colour from penetrating.
  7. Check that the whole skin edge is covered, with no gaps where colour could touch the skin.
  8. After the colour is rinsed off, wipe the cream from the skin and remove any stray stains with a damp cotton pad.

The protective equipment used with basing:

  • Gloves: Prevent colour from staining or irritating the stylist's hands and reduce the risk of allergy.
  • Protective cape: Keeps colour off the client's clothing and body.
  • Barrier cream: Forms the protective base on the skin around the hairline and ears.
  • Neck strip or towel: Absorbs drips and keeps colour from running down the neck.
  • Tint brush: Allows the barrier cream to be applied neatly to small areas.

Assessing hair condition and history

Before any colouring process, a detailed assessment of the client's hair condition and history is mandatory. This evaluation determines whether the service is suitable and helps avoid damage. Example: a SACCO cashier who has relaxed her hair twice this year is assessed carefully, because the earlier chemical treatments change how her hair will react to colour.

  • Hair porosity: Porosity indicates how well the hair will absorb colour. Highly porous hair may absorb colour quickly but also lose moisture, so it needs conditioning treatments.
  • Previous chemical treatments: Identifying past treatments such as relaxers, perms or earlier colouring helps predict how the hair will react to new chemicals.
  • Scalp health: Check for conditions such as irritation or infection, so that these are not aggravated by the colouring process.
  • Hair texture and density: These factors influence the amount of product needed and the processing time.
  • Client expectations and allergies: Discussing the desired result and asking about allergies prevents adverse reactions and ensures client satisfaction.

Sectioning and workspace preparation

Organising the hair into manageable sections is critical for uniform colour application and for limiting product waste. Good workspace preparation lets the stylist work without interruption once the colour has been mixed. Example: a stylist at a county-town salon divides a client's thick hair into clean sections before mixing any product, so that the colour is not left standing while she searches for clips.

  • Sectioning: Divide the hair into four or more sections depending on thickness and length.
  • Clips: Use clips to keep sections separate and accessible, releasing one section at a time.
  • Clean partings: Make straight, clean partings with a tail comb so that no strands are missed.
  • Tools and products within reach: Place brushes, bowls, gloves, towels and the timer on the trolley before starting.
  • Clean, well-lit environment: A tidy, bright work area allows precise application and reduces the risk of spills and contamination.

Strand test and allergy test

Performing tests before full application safeguards against unexpected results and health risks. The strand test shows how the hair will react, while the allergy test shows how the skin will react. Example: a bank teller who has never coloured her hair is given both tests, and the results are recorded on her client card before the full service is booked.

  • Strand test: Apply colour to a small hidden section of hair to check the desired shade, the processing time and the hair's reaction.
  • Allergy test: A patch test behind the ear or on the inner elbow, done 48 hours before application, detects potential allergic reactions.
  • Interpreting results: Based on the test outcomes, adjust the product choice, strength or technique to suit the client's needs.
  • Recording results: Write down the product, the time and the outcome on the client record card, so that future services can be planned correctly.
  • Client consent: Inform the client of the test results and obtain consent before proceeding. If a reaction has occurred, do not carry out the service.
