Chapter 1: Prepare hair extensions
📚 5 Topics
⚑ What you will be able to do

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Select and wear the correct personal protective gear safely for hair extension work.
  • Clean and disinfect hair extension tools and equipment correctly, following hygiene procedures.
  • Clean your workstation thoroughly and dispose of waste safely according to workplace guidelines.

Mastering these skills helps you maintain a safe, clean, and professional environment, which is essential for successful hair extension services.

Hair extensions have become an essential service within the cosmetology industry, offering clients versatility and style enhancement. Preparing hair extensions properly is critical to ensure a natural look, durability, and scalp health. This chapter introduces key terminology related to hair extensions and highlights the protective measures cosmetology professionals must undertake to safeguard themselves and their clients during preparation. Understanding personal protective equipment (PPE) and its correct use is particularly important for maintaining hygiene and safety standards in Kenyan salons and beauty parlours.

1.1 Definition of Terms

The terminology used in hair extension preparation is foundational for effective communication and professional practice. In Kenya, cosmetology professionals encounter various terms that describe materials, techniques, and safety concepts. Clear understanding of these terms improves service quality and client satisfaction.

Hair extensions

Hair extensions refer to synthetic or natural hair strands attached to a client's existing hair to add length, volume, or colour. The choice of extension depends on client preference, hair type, and maintenance capability.

Extensions are made from two broad sources. Human hair extensions are cut from real hair, so they can be washed, heat styled and coloured much like natural hair. Synthetic extensions are made from manufactured fibres, are usually cheaper and hold their style well, but they react badly to high heat unless they are labelled heat resistant.

Hair extensions are also grouped by the way they are attached to the natural hair. Each type needs its own preparation method, so the stylist must know how long it lasts, how much damage it can cause and how it is removed. The main types are:

  • Clip-in extensions: Temporary wefts with small clips that the client can attach and remove at home. They suit short-term styling such as an evening event.
  • Tape-in extensions: Semi-permanent wefts that use adhesive tape to attach strands close to the scalp. They lie flat against the head and need professional removal.
  • Sew-in extensions: Also called weaves, these are sewn onto braided natural hair for long-lasting results. The braids must be neat and not too tight, to protect the scalp.
  • Fusion extensions: Attached using keratin bonds and heat to fuse each extension strand to a small section of natural hair. The process needs training because heat is applied close to the scalp.
  • Micro-link extensions: Small beads or rings used to secure extensions without heat or glue. They are fixed with a plier and can be moved up as the natural hair grows.

Example: A client at a salon wants shoulder-length hair to reach the middle of her back for a wedding in two weeks. The stylist recommends sew-in extensions on braided natural hair, because she needs a style that lasts and will not slip during dancing.

Wig block

A wig block is a head-shaped form, usually made of canvas-covered cork, dense foam or a mannequin head, on which a wig is made, fitted, dressed or stored. It imitates the shape and size of a human head, so the stylist can work with both hands free and without a client present. Blocks come in different sizes matched to head circumference, so the finished wig fits the wearer.

A wig block is used in several ways:

  • Construction: The wig cap or foundation is pinned onto the block while hair is attached, so the shape of the head is kept throughout the work.
  • Styling: Cutting, setting, curling and colouring are done on the block, which keeps the wig stable.
  • Fitting: The block shows how the wig sits around the hairline, crown and nape before it is handed to the client.
  • Drying and setting: A wet-set wig is left on the block so it dries in the intended shape.
  • Storage and display: A wig kept on a block holds its shape and does not tangle or flatten.

Example: A cosmetology training college gives each trainee a wig block. The trainee pins a wig cap onto the block, sews wefts around it and then trims the finished wig on the same block.

Scalp and hair terms

Assessing the client's scalp and natural hair condition before extension application is crucial. Healthy hair and scalp provide a strong foundation, reducing risks of damage, infection, or allergic reactions. Professionals should be familiar with the following terms to tailor preparation accordingly.

  • Hair texture: The thickness of individual strands (fine, medium or coarse) and their pattern (straight, wavy, curly or coily). It guides the choice of extension type and weight.
  • Porosity: How easily the hair absorbs and holds moisture. Highly porous hair is often dry or damaged and may not support heavy extensions.
  • Elasticity: The ability of the hair to stretch and return to its shape without breaking. Hair with poor elasticity breaks easily under the tension of braids or bonds.
  • Density: The number of hairs on a given area of the scalp. Thin density limits how many extension attachments the natural hair can carry.
  • Scalp condition: The state of the skin under the hair, including dryness, dandruff, sores or irritation. Infected or inflamed scalps should be treated before any extension is fitted.
  • Allergic reaction: A skin response to products such as bonding glue. A patch test before application helps to identify clients at risk.
