Chapter 3: Perform post plaiting and braiding procedure
📚 3 Topics
⚑ What you will be able to do

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • safely clean and disinfect braiding and plaiting tools and equipment following correct work procedures
  • thoroughly clean your workstation to maintain a neat and hygienic environment
  • correctly dispose of waste materials according to proper work procedures
  • properly clean, disinfect, and store braiding and plaiting recyclable supplies to keep them ready for reuse

Mastering these skills helps you maintain a safe, clean, and professional workspace, which is essential for quality service and customer satisfaction in the trade.

Post plaiting and braiding procedures are critical in maintaining hygiene, client satisfaction, and the longevity of the hairstyle. In Kenyan cosmetology practice, proper cleaning and disinfection of plaiting and braiding tools and equipment prevent the spread of infections and ensure safety for both clients and professionals. This chapter emphasizes the correct methods to clean and disinfect tools after use, reflecting the high standards expected in salons and spas across Nairobi, Mombasa, and other urban centers. These procedures also protect the cosmetologist’s professional reputation and comply with the health regulations enforced by the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Bureau of Standards.

3.1 Cleaning, disinfecting plaiting and braiding tools and equipment

In busy salons, where many clients are served in one day, cleaning and disinfecting tools after every client is non-negotiable. Tools such as combs, sectioning clips, crochet needles and blow dryers come into direct contact with hair and scalp, so they can carry fungal, bacterial or viral infections if they are not properly cleaned and disinfected. Cleaning removes hair, oils, product residue and skin flakes, which also allows the disinfectant to reach the surface. Disinfecting then destroys the disease-causing microorganisms that remain after cleaning. Together they prevent cross-contamination, protect the client and the braider, lengthen the life of tools and build client confidence. This topic explains how to clean and disinfect combs, blow dryers and crochet needles, the materials used, and the practices that keep tools hygienic.

Cleaning agents and disinfectants

Choosing the right cleaning agent and disinfectant matters because the wrong chemical can damage tools or fail to kill pathogens. Salons obtain these products from local suppliers, and the label must always be read for dilution and contact time. Example: a braiding salon may keep one labelled container of warm detergent solution for cleaning and a separate labelled container of disinfectant, so the two are never confused and chemicals are never mixed.

Cleaning agents:

  • Detergents: These are surfactants that dissolve oils and debris. Mild liquid soaps or cleaners designed for tools are suitable.
  • Enzymatic cleaners: These break down protein-based residues such as dried hair products or skin flakes, improving cleaning efficiency.
  • Solvents: In some cases, alcohol-based solutions help dissolve sticky residues but are not substitutes for detergents.
  • Water: Warm water aids in loosening dirt and is used together with detergents during cleaning.
  • Non-abrasive scrubbing tools: Brushes or sponges designed to clean without scratching are used alongside chemical agents.

Disinfectants:

  • Quaternary ammonium compounds (quats): These have broad antimicrobial action and are generally gentle on tools when used at the correct dilution.
  • Chlorine-based disinfectants: Sodium hypochlorite solutions are effective but must be used with caution to prevent corrosion of metal tools.
  • Alcohol (70% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol): Fast-acting against bacteria and many viruses but less effective against spores.
  • Phenolic disinfectants: Used in some professional settings, though they require careful handling due to toxicity.
  • Hydrogen peroxide: A lower-toxicity option with effective antimicrobial action when used at the correct strength.

Combs

Combs are used for parting, sectioning, detangling and smoothing hair, so they touch the scalp and collect hair, oil, product residue and skin flakes between their teeth. A comb that is only rinsed can still pass scalp infections such as tinea capitis from one client to the next. Example: in a braiding studio in a shopping centre, a rat-tail comb may be used on four or five clients a day, so it must be cleaned and disinfected after each one.

Name Specification Use
Rat-tail comb Fine teeth with a long pointed tail, plastic or metal Making clean, straight partings and sectioning hair
Wide-tooth comb Widely spaced teeth, usually plastic Detangling hair gently before plaiting
Fine-tooth comb Closely spaced teeth, plastic or metal Smoothing edges and removing loose hair
Sectioning clips Plastic or metal clips Holding sections of hair away from the working area

Plastic and metal combs can be soaked and disinfected. Wooden combs are porous and cannot be disinfected reliably, so they should not be used on clients or should be replaced once soiled. Sectioning clips and brushes are cleaned and disinfected in the same way as combs.

Procedure for cleaning and disinfecting combs:

  1. Remove hair and visible debris by picking out strands with the tail of a comb or your fingers, then rinse under running water.
  2. Prepare a cleaning solution of warm water mixed with detergent or enzymatic cleaner, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  3. Soak the combs in the cleaning solution for at least 10 minutes to loosen oils and residues.
  4. Scrub between the teeth with a soft brush so that stubborn particles are removed without scratching the surface.
  5. Rinse thoroughly under clean running water to wash away all detergent and loosened debris.
  6. Dry completely with a clean towel before disinfecting, because water left on the comb dilutes the disinfectant.
  7. Immerse fully in a disinfectant solution for the contact time on the label, usually between 10 and 30 minutes depending on the chemical used.
  8. Rinse if the label requires it, since some disinfectants must be rinsed off to remove residues.
  9. Dry again thoroughly on a clean surface or with a clean towel before the comb is reused.

Blow dryers

Blow dryers are used to dry hair before plaiting and to set the ends of braids and twists. They are electrical, so they must never be soaked in water or disinfectant. The parts that touch the client's hair or scalp area, such as the nozzle and the handle, still need regular cleaning. Dust, lint and loose hair drawn in at the air intake also block airflow, make the dryer overheat and can become a fire risk. Example: in a salon where several stylists share dryers, the handle and nozzle are wiped after every client and the intake is cleared regularly.

Name Specification Use
Handheld blow dryer Electric motor and heating element with an air intake grille at the back Drying hair and ends of braids
Concentrator nozzle Narrow removable attachment Directing air onto small sections of hair
Diffuser Removable attachment with a wide, finger-like head Drying hair gently without disturbing curls or twists
Intake filter or grille Removable cover on many models Stopping lint and hair entering the motor

Procedure for cleaning and disinfecting blow dryers:

  1. Switch off, unplug and allow the dryer to cool before any cleaning, to prevent electric shock and burns.
  2. Remove the nozzle, diffuser and intake filter or grille if the manufacturer's instructions allow it.
  3. Brush out lint and hair from the intake and grille with a dry, soft brush.
  4. Wash the removable attachments in warm water and detergent, rinse them well and dry them completely.
  5. Wipe the body, handle, switch and cable with a clean cloth lightly dampened with disinfectant such as 70% alcohol. Keep liquid out of the vents and the motor.
  6. Allow all parts to dry fully before refitting the attachments.
  7. Inspect the cable and plug for cracks, loose fittings or burn marks, and withdraw a damaged dryer from use until it is repaired.

Crochet needles

Crochet needles (crochet hooks and latch hooks) are used to pull hair or extensions through plaits, to install braids and to finish ends. Extension fibre, hair and product build up inside the hook and latch, where they are hard to see. The tip can also scratch the scalp, so a contaminated crochet needle can transfer bacteria into broken skin. Example: in a college training salon, each learner's crochet needles are cleaned and disinfected after every practical session before they go back into the kit.

Name Specification Use
Crochet hook Metal shaft with a hooked tip, available in different shaft thicknesses Pulling hair or extensions through plaits and loops
Latch hook Metal hook with a small movable latch Pulling extension hair through the base of braids or locs

Procedure for cleaning and disinfecting crochet needles:

  1. Remove fibre and hair caught in the hook or latch using a fine pin or a small brush, working away from your fingers.
  2. Wash in warm detergent solution, scrubbing the hook, latch and shaft with a soft brush.
  3. Rinse under clean running water until no soap remains.
  4. Inspect the tip and latch for burrs, bends, rust or a stiff latch. Discard any crochet needle that is damaged, because it can injure the scalp and cannot be cleaned properly.
  5. Immerse in disinfectant such as 70% alcohol or another suitable disinfectant, for the contact time stated on the label.
  6. Remove and rinse if the label requires, taking care not to touch the working end.
  7. Dry thoroughly with a clean towel so that moisture does not cause rust, and work the latch several times to check that it moves freely.
