Chapter 2: Perform facial treatment
📚 3 Topics

Facial treatment is a fundamental service in cosmetology that significantly enhances skin health and client satisfaction. In Kenya’s diverse cosmetology sector, from upscale salons in Nairobi to county-level beauty clinics, performing facial treatments requires a thorough understanding of skin preparation. Proper skin preparation ensures that treatments are effective, safe, and tailored to individual skin types, thereby elevating professional standards and client trust. This chapter focuses on the essential steps and considerations involved in preparing the skin before the actual facial treatment begins.

2.1 Skin preparation

Skin preparation is the first phase of a facial treatment. It involves sanitizing, cleansing and toning, followed by assessment, so that the skin is ready to receive the treatment that follows. A clean, balanced and comfortable skin surface allows products to penetrate better and reduces the chance of irritation or infection. Example: a cosmetologist who rushes a client with oily, make-up-covered skin straight to a mask will trap dirt and sebum under the product and get a poor result.

Sanitizing

Sanitizing reduces the number of micro-organisms on the cosmetologist's hands, the tools and the work area before the client's skin is touched. It protects both client and cosmetologist from cross-contamination and is the foundation of every facial. Example: in a salon treatment room, the couch, trolley, bowls and spatulas are all cleaned and sanitised before the client lies down.

Follow these steps before every facial:

  1. Wash and sanitise your hands: Wash with soap and running water, dry with a clean towel or disposable paper, then apply hand sanitiser. Repeat whenever you touch your own face, hair or phone during the service.
  2. Clean the work surfaces: Wipe the trolley, the couch and any surface that will hold products using a suitable salon disinfectant, following the maker's contact time.
  3. Sanitise reusable tools: Clean bowls, spatulas, brushes and sponges, then disinfect them according to the product instructions and let them dry before use. Never place used tools back on the clean trolley.
  4. Prepare clean linen: Cover the couch with a fresh sheet or disposable cover and use clean towels for each client. Used linen should never be reused between clients.
  5. Protect the client: Fit a clean headband or head cover to keep hair off the face, and offer a gown or towel to protect clothing.
  6. Set out fresh disposables: Lay out clean cotton pads, tissues and spatulas for single use. Throw away anything that has touched the client in a covered bin after the service.
  7. Keep products hygienic: Use a clean spatula to scoop cream from jars, never your fingers, and close containers immediately after use.

Cleansing

Cleansing removes make-up, sweat, surface dirt and excess oil so that the pores are clear and the skin can be assessed accurately. Cleansing milk dissolves make-up and surface grime gently without disrupting the skin's moisture barrier, while a facial cleanser then removes deeper impurities. The cleanser must suit the client's skin type, otherwise the skin may become over-dry or excessively oily. Example: a client arriving from work with foundation and a day's sweat on her skin needs both stages of cleansing before any treatment product is applied.

Name Specification Use
Cleansing milk pH balanced, gentle on skin Removes make-up and surface impurities
Facial cleanser Formulated for a specific skin type Deep cleansing of pores
Cotton pads Soft, lint-free Applying and removing products
Lukewarm water Temperature between 30 and 37°C Rinsing cleanser without irritation

Follow these steps:

  1. Position the client: Settle the client comfortably with the hair covered, and explain what you are about to do so that she stays relaxed.
  2. Remove eye and lip make-up first: Use a suitable remover on damp cotton pads and wipe gently, without pulling the delicate skin around the eyes.
  3. Apply cleansing milk: Warm a small amount in your palms and spread it over the face and neck with gentle, upward massage movements to dissolve make-up and surface dirt.
  4. Remove the milk: Wipe off with clean damp cotton pads or a clean damp sponge, using a fresh pad for each pass so that dirt is not spread back onto the skin.
  5. Deep cleanse: Apply the facial cleanser chosen for the client's skin type and massage gently to loosen deeper impurities and excess sebum, avoiding the eye area.
  6. Rinse with lukewarm water: Remove the cleanser with lukewarm water or warm damp sponges. Hot water can irritate or dry out the skin and should be avoided.
  7. Pat dry: Dry the face with a clean towel using light patting movements, never rubbing.

Always use fresh cotton pads for each product application, and clean any reusable item after use.

Toning

Toning is the final stage of skin preparation. A toner removes the last traces of cleanser, refreshes the skin and helps restore its natural slightly acidic balance after cleansing, leaving the skin ready for treatment products. Toner is applied with cotton pads so that the coverage is even and the skin feels firmer and the pores look finer. Example: after cleansing a client with dry, tight-feeling skin, an alcohol-free hydrating toner leaves the skin comfortable, whereas a strong astringent would worsen the dryness.

Name Specification Use
Alcohol-free hydrating toner Gentle, non-stripping Restores balance and comfort on normal, dry and sensitive skin
Astringent toner Stronger formula, used with care Helps remove excess oil on oily skin

Follow these steps:

  1. Select the toner: Choose a toner that matches the client's skin type and check that the client has no known sensitivity to its ingredients.
  2. Prepare the pads: Dampen two clean cotton pads with toner until they are moist but not dripping.
  3. Apply to the neck and face: Sweep the pads gently upward and outward over the neck, chin, cheeks and forehead, keeping clear of the eyes.
  4. Use a fresh pad: Repeat with new pads until the last pad comes away clean, showing that no cleanser or residue remains.
  5. Check the skin: Look for redness, stinging or unusual reaction. If any appears, stop using that toner and use a milder one.
  6. Allow the skin to settle: Let the toner dry on the skin or pat gently with a clean tissue, then move on to the skin analysis.

Purpose of skin preparation

Skin preparation does more than clean the face: it sets the foundation for every later step of the facial.

  • Remove surface impurities: Eliminating dirt, oil and make-up prevents clogged pores and helps treatment products to work.
  • Enhance product absorption: Clean skin allows serums, masks and moisturisers to penetrate better.
  • Protect skin integrity: Proper preparation reduces the risk of irritation or allergic reactions by removing contaminants.
  • Assess skin condition: A clean face lets the cosmetologist judge skin type and sensitivity before customising the treatment.
  • Promote client comfort: A clean, refreshed skin surface helps the client relax and enjoy the service.

Importance of skin preparation

  • Optimises treatment results: Thorough preparation lets active ingredients reach the skin more effectively.
  • Prevents infection: Removing bacteria and debris, together with good hygiene practice, lowers the risk of infection.
  • Facilitates accurate diagnosis: A clear surface makes acne, pigmentation or dryness easier to identify so that treatment can be targeted.
  • Builds professional credibility: Careful, visible preparation builds client trust and repeat business.
  • Supports skin health maintenance: Professional preparation complements the client's daily skincare routine and contributes to long-term skin health.

Skin analysis

Once the skin is cleansed and toned, the cosmetologist can examine it properly. Analysis is done by looking closely under good light and by touching the skin gently, and the findings guide the choice of treatment and products.

  • Texture: Note whether the skin is smooth, rough, flaky or uneven.
  • Hydration: Check for tightness, dryness or dehydration lines.
  • Oil balance: Observe shine, enlarged pores and blackheads, especially in the T-zone.
  • Sensitivity: Look for redness, broken capillaries or reactions to the products already used.
  • Specific concerns: Record acne, pigmentation, scarring or other conditions that the treatment must address.

Skin types and their impact on preparation techniques

Knowing the client's skin type helps the cosmetologist choose suitable cleansing and toning products and techniques. A cosmetologist adjusts the approach after analysis to avoid aggravating conditions such as acne or eczema.

  • Normal skin: Balanced oil and moisture; gentle cleansing and toning without heavy products is enough.
  • Oily skin: Excess sebum causes shine and enlarged pores; the cleanser must remove oil thoroughly without stripping the skin.
  • Dry skin: Tight and flaky; creamy, hydrating products are needed to prevent irritation.
  • Combination skin: Oily in the T-zone and dry elsewhere; products may be chosen differently for each zone.
  • Sensitive skin: Prone to redness and irritation; hypoallergenic, fragrance-free products and minimal manipulation are needed.
