Chapter 3: Perform post dread locking service procedure
📚 3 Topics
⚑ What you will be able to do

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • safely clean and disinfect dread locking tools and equipment following correct work procedures
  • clean your work station thoroughly and dispose of waste safely according to guidelines
  • properly clean, disinfect, and store dread locking recyclable supplies following work procedures

Mastering these skills ensures a clean, safe, and professional environment, which is essential for providing excellent dread locking services and protecting both yourself and your clients.

Post dread locking service procedures are critical for maintaining client satisfaction and ensuring hygiene standards in Kenyan cosmetology salons. After completing the locking process, cosmetologists must focus on cleaning and disinfecting their tools and equipment to prevent infections and cross-contamination. Proper sanitation not only protects clients at institutions such as county government beauty parlours but also safeguards the stylist’s health and reputation. This chapter delves into the essential steps and professional practices involved in cleaning and disinfecting dread lock tools and equipment.

3.1 Clean and disinfect tools and equipment

After every dread locking service, the tools that touched the client's scalp and hair must be made safe before they are used on the next client. Combs, crochet or latch hook locking needles, sectioning clips, scissors and clippers collect hair fibres, scalp oils, product residue and sometimes traces of blood from small nicks. Warm, humid conditions and frequent client turnover let bacteria and fungi multiply on these surfaces if hygiene is neglected, which can pass scalp infections such as tinea capitis or bacterial folliculitis from one client to another. The correct sequence is always the same: clean first, then disinfect, then store so the tools stay safe until the next use. Follow the salon's own hygiene policy and any health regulations that apply to your premises.

Clean

Cleaning is the physical removal of visible dirt, oils, hair residue and organic matter from a tool using water, detergent and scrubbing. It must come before disinfection because organic debris shields microorganisms and can inactivate the disinfectant, so a dirty tool placed in disinfectant is still unsafe. Cleaning should be done immediately after the service, before residues dry and harden. Example: hair and wax residue left between the teeth of a tail comb is far harder to remove the next morning than straight after the client leaves.

Reasons why cleaning precedes disinfection:

  • Removal of organic matter: Hair, skin cells and oils can neutralise disinfectants and stop them reaching the tool surface.
  • Prevention of cross-contamination: Washing physically removes contaminants that could otherwise transfer between clients.
  • Longer tool life: Regular cleaning stops residues building up and dulling or corroding needles, scissors and clipper blades.
  • Safety of the cosmetologist: Clean tools reduce the risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens when handling sharp items.
  • Professional standards: Clients expect to see visibly clean equipment, which builds trust in the salon.

Steps for cleaning dread lock tools:

  1. Preparation: Gather all used tools onto a tray and put on protective gloves. Handle needles and scissors with care to avoid cuts and pricks.
  2. Remove loose hair: Pick or brush loose hair and fibres off combs, clips and needles before wetting them, so the sink does not clog.
  3. Rinse under running water: Rinse each tool with warm water to loosen product, oil and remaining debris.
  4. Apply detergent: Use a mild liquid detergent and scrub with a small brush, paying attention to comb teeth, hinges, clip springs and the hook and shaft of locking needles.
  5. Soak if necessary: For stubborn residue such as wax or gel build-up, soak plastic and metal tools in soapy water for 10 to 15 minutes, then scrub again.
  6. Rinse thoroughly: Remove all detergent under running water, because soap film can weaken some disinfectants.
  7. Dry completely: Dry with a clean towel or air dry on a clean surface. Moisture left on tools encourages microbial growth and rust on metal parts.

Locking needles need special attention because hair fibres and scalp oils cling easily to the hook and shaft. Electrical equipment such as clippers must be unplugged and must never be immersed: remove loose hair with a brush and wipe the blades and body with a damp cloth.

Disinfect

Disinfection destroys most disease-causing bacteria, viruses and fungi on a tool that has already been cleaned. The disinfectant must suit the tool's material so it does not corrode or damage it, and it must stay in contact with the tool for the full contact time stated on the product label. Example: a plastic tail comb can be immersed in a correctly diluted disinfectant, while stainless steel scissors may need a method that does not cause rust.

Common disinfection methods:

  • Chemical disinfectants: Solutions such as 70% isopropyl alcohol, a suitable quaternary ammonium or chlorhexidine-based salon disinfectant, or diluted household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) are used. Always mix and use them exactly as the manufacturer directs.
  • Autoclaving: High-pressure steam sterilisation is very effective for metal tools that can withstand heat and moisture, but it needs specialised equipment and is not available in every salon.
  • UV light cabinets: These can help keep already cleaned and disinfected tools protected, but UV does not reach shadowed or dirty surfaces, so it must never replace cleaning and chemical disinfection.
  • Dry heat sterilisation: Suitable for metal tools that tolerate high temperatures, but it requires specialised equipment and consistent temperature control.
  • Disinfectant sprays: Convenient for quick treatment of surfaces and large items, but less reliable for heavily soiled tools or tools with crevices.

Matching tools to methods:

Tool Material Suitable disinfection
Tail comb, wide-tooth comb Plastic Immersion in a correctly diluted chemical disinfectant, then rinse and dry
Locking needle Stainless steel 70% isopropyl alcohol or immersion in a disinfectant approved for metal; autoclave where available
Scissors Stainless steel Wipe or immerse in 70% isopropyl alcohol; dry at once to prevent rust
Sectioning clips Plastic or metal Immersion in a suitable disinfectant, rinse and dry
Clippers Metal blades, plastic body Blades treated with a clipper disinfectant spray or alcohol; body wiped, never immersed

Steps for disinfecting cleaned tools:

  1. Check the tools are clean and dry: Reject any tool with visible residue and return it to the cleaning stage.
  2. Prepare fresh solution: Mix the disinfectant in a clean, lidded container as directed. For household bleach of about 5% strength, one common dilution is 1 part bleach to 9 parts water (for example 100 ml bleach in 900 ml water to make 1 litre). Use plastic items only for bleach, as it corrodes metal.
  3. Label the container: Write the product name and the time it was mixed, and replace the solution as the label directs or when it becomes cloudy or dirty.
  4. Immerse the tools fully: Wear gloves and place tools so every surface is covered, with no trapped air in hinges or comb teeth.
  5. Observe the contact time: Time the immersion using the label instructions, for example 10 minutes where the product states so.
  6. Remove with clean tongs or gloves: Lift tools out without touching the inside of the container with dirty hands.
  7. Rinse and dry: Rinse if the product requires it, then dry with a clean towel or air dry on a clean tray before storage.

Store

Storage keeps disinfected tools free from dust, moisture and contact with used items until the next client. A perfectly disinfected needle that is dropped into a drawer with dirty tools is contaminated again. Good storage depends on clean containers, clear separation and regular checks.

Guidelines for handling and storing disinfected tools:

  • Use clean hands or gloves: Handle disinfected tools with freshly washed hands or clean gloves so they are not recontaminated.
  • Store in clean, covered containers: Use sealed boxes, lidded trays or clean pouches that protect tools from dust and airborne microbes.
  • Separate clean and used tools: Keep compartments for disinfected tools apart from those for used tools, and label each clearly to prevent mix-ups.
  • Keep storage dry and ventilated: Damp conditions promote microbial growth and rust, so tools must be fully dry before they are put away.
  • Protect sharp items: Store needles and scissors with tips covered or in holders so that they do not injure the cosmetologist or damage other tools.
  • Inspect storage regularly: Wipe and disinfect drawers, boxes and trays often, and check that tools are still clean, undamaged and free of rust.
  • Rotate tools: Keep enough sets of tools so that each client receives disinfected items and used ones are not rushed back into service.
