Performing hair addition services is a critical skill for cosmetology professionals in Kenya, especially given the diverse hair textures and styles preferred by clients across the country. Proper hair addition enhances client appearance, confidence, and satisfaction while requiring thorough preparation to ensure the best results and scalp health. This chapter begins with a focus on preparing the client’s hair, which is foundational for a successful hair addition application and long-lasting results.

2.1 Client’s Hair Preparation

Preparing the client’s hair before a hair addition service involves several careful steps to ensure the natural hair and scalp are in optimal condition. This preparation not only improves the adhesion and integration of the hair addition but also protects the client’s hair from damage. In Kenyan salons, where clients may have varied hair types from tightly coiled to loosely curled or straightened hair, adapting preparation techniques to the individual client is essential.

Undoing

Undoing is the careful removal of a previous style such as old braids, twists, a weave or attached extensions before the new service begins. Done properly, it frees the natural hair without pulling out healthy strands or damaging the scalp. Example: a client arrives at the salon with braids that have been in for several weeks, and the stylist must remove them without cutting into the client’s own hair.

Name Specification Use
Rat-tail comb Fine plastic teeth with a pointed tail Lifting and separating braids and parting sections
Wide-tooth comb Smooth, rounded teeth, plastic or wood Detangling after the style is removed
Small scissors or seam ripper Sharp, blunt-tipped Cutting only the extension hair at the base of braids or wefts
Spray bottle Filled with water and a little conditioner Giving slip and softening matted hair
Sectioning clips Non-snagging, plastic or metal Holding released hair out of the way
Cape and towel Water-resistant cape, clean towel Protecting the client’s clothing and collecting loose hair

Follow these steps:

  1. Inspect the style: Look at the scalp and the condition of the braids, weave or extensions. Note any tightness, broken hair, sores or matting so that you can handle those areas with extra care.
  2. Prepare the client and tools: Drape the client, sanitise the tools and lay them out. Seat the client comfortably, since removal can take a long time.
  3. Soften the hair: Lightly mist the style with the water and conditioner mix, or apply a little light oil to the ends of braids. This gives slip and reduces breakage when the hair is unravelled.
  4. Release the extension: Locate the point where the added hair joins the natural hair. Cut the extension hair a few centimetres below this point, taking care never to cut the client’s own hair. For sewn-in wefts, snip the thread only and lift the weft away.
  5. Unravel from the ends upwards: Undo each braid or twist from the tip towards the root, using the tail of the comb or your fingers. Pulling from the root causes tension and breakage.
  6. Separate shed hair gently: Hair that has shed naturally collects in the style and forms tangles at the roots. Ease it out with your fingers rather than ripping it free.
  7. Finger detangle first, then comb: Work through each released section with your fingers, then use the wide-tooth comb starting at the ends and moving up to the roots.
  8. Re-examine hair and scalp: Once the style is out, check for breakage, thinning, irritation or product build-up, and record what you find before shampooing.

Shampooing

Shampooing cleans the scalp and hair of dirt, sweat, oils and product build-up that would otherwise weaken the grip of a hair addition and shorten how long the style lasts. The shampoo must suit the client’s hair type and scalp condition. A moisturising shampoo benefits clients with dry, brittle hair, while a clarifying shampoo works for hair with heavy product build-up. Example: a stylist washing the hair of a client whose old braids have left a layer of product at the roots uses a clarifying shampoo, but handles the scalp gently to avoid irritation before the hair addition.

Follow these steps:

  1. Detangle first: Gently detangle the hair while it is still dry or only slightly damp, working from the ends upwards. Washing tangled hair creates knots that are difficult to remove later.
  2. Check the water: Use lukewarm water. Water that is too hot dries the scalp and irritates it, and cold water does not lift oils well.
  3. Wet the hair thoroughly: Saturate the hair from roots to ends so the shampoo spreads evenly with less rubbing.
  4. Apply the shampoo: Dilute the shampoo in your palms and apply it to the scalp first, then work it down the lengths. Concentrating on the scalp avoids rough handling of the more fragile ends.
  5. Massage the scalp: Use the pads of your fingers, not the nails, in slow circular movements. This improves circulation, supports scalp health, loosens flakes and relaxes the client.
  6. Rinse thoroughly: Rinse until the water runs clear and the hair feels clean but not stripped. Leftover shampoo causes itching and flaking that can undermine adhesion.
  7. Repeat if needed: For hair with heavy build-up, shampoo a second time with a lighter application before moving on to conditioning.

Conditioning

Conditioning restores moisture and smooths the hair cuticle after shampooing, which reduces tangles and breakage during the hair addition process. It makes the hair soft and manageable so it can be sectioned and braided without strain. Example: a client with relaxed, dry hair will need a richer deep conditioner than a client with healthy, untreated hair.

Follow these steps:

  1. Remove excess water: Squeeze water from the hair with a towel so the conditioner is not diluted.
  2. Choose the product: Use a rinse-out conditioner for normal hair and a deep treatment for dry, chemically treated or fragile hair. Choose a product that rinses clean and leaves no oily or sticky film.
  3. Apply in sections: Part the hair and smooth the conditioner from the mid-lengths to the ends, then lightly onto the roots. Ends are the driest and most fragile part.
  4. Detangle: While the conditioner is on, use a wide-tooth comb from the ends upwards to remove knots, so that nothing snags during attachment.
  5. Allow time to work: Leave the product on for the time stated on its label. A plastic cap or warm towel can increase absorption for deep treatments.
  6. Rinse well: Rinse with lukewarm or cool water. Cooler water helps to lay the cuticle flat and adds shine.

Blow drying

Blow drying removes the water left after conditioning and stretches the hair so it can be sectioned neatly and braided or attached evenly. Hair must be dried completely, because damp hair trapped under a hair addition encourages fungal growth and unpleasant odours. Heat can damage fragile or chemically treated hair, so the dryer is used on a low to medium setting, and air drying or gentle towel drying is preferred for very weak hair. Example: a client with thick, tightly coiled hair needs stretched, fully dry hair so that cornrows lie flat and neat.

Follow these steps:

  1. Blot the hair: Remove excess water with a soft towel by pressing, not rubbing, which causes frizz and breakage.
  2. Apply protection: Work a heat protectant and a light leave-in product through the hair so that it is shielded from heat.
  3. Divide into sections: Clip the hair into four or more sections so each can be dried in turn.
  4. Set the dryer: Use low to medium heat with a comb attachment or diffuser nozzle. Hold the dryer about 15 cm from the hair and keep it moving.
  5. Dry with light tension: Take small subsections and run the comb through them from root to tip with the airflow pointing downwards. This smooths the cuticle and stretches the curl pattern without pulling.
  6. Finish with cool air: Switch to the cool setting to set the hair and add shine.
  7. Check the roots: Feel at the scalp and the base of each section to confirm that there is no dampness left.

Sectioning and preparing the hair for attachment

Sectioning the hair correctly is fundamental to achieving a natural look and secure attachment of the hair addition. It organises the hair into manageable parts and dictates the placement of the extension or weave.

  • Creating clean and even sections: Using a rat-tail comb, the stylist creates neat, straight sections that correspond to the desired style and attachment method. Clean sections prevent tangling and uneven distribution of the addition.
  • Securing sections with clips: Each section is secured with clips or bands to keep the hair organised and out of the way during attachment. This allows the stylist to work methodically from one section to the next.
  • Preparing the base for attachment: Depending on the hair addition technique, the base may require braiding, cornrowing or smoothing. For example, cornrows can serve as a stable base on which a hair addition is later attached.
  • Protecting the hairline and edges: These areas are delicate and visible, so special care is taken to avoid tension and damage. Lighter attachment techniques or protective styling may be used here.
  • Client comfort and communication: Throughout sectioning, the stylist checks that the client is comfortable and explains what is being done. This builds trust and helps manage expectations about the final look.

Protective treatments before attachment

Applying protective treatments before the hair addition safeguards the natural hair and prepares it for the added weight and styling. This step can prevent damage and help both the client’s hair and the addition last longer.

  • Leave-in conditioners and moisturisers: Lightweight leave-in products help maintain hair moisture during the service and reduce breakage. Moisturising sprays that do not weigh down the hair are a suitable choice.
  • Heat protectants: If heat styling is done before or after the hair addition, a heat protectant shields the hair from thermal damage.
  • Scalp soothing products: Natural ingredients such as aloe vera or tea tree oil can soothe sensitive scalps and reduce inflammation. Tea tree oil is used only diluted, never neat on the scalp.
  • Anti-breakage serums: Serums designed to strengthen hair strands reduce the risk of breakage during attachment and styling. They are especially useful for clients with chemically treated or fragile hair.
  • Avoiding heavy oils and residue before application: Heavy oils, silicones and other sticky products can interfere with the adhesion of methods such as bonding or gluing, and they leave a residue that weakens the hold. Advise clients not to apply such products on the day of the service, and use residue-free products during preparation.
