Chapter 7: Construct superstructure walls
📚 4 Topics
⚑ What you will be able to do

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Wear the correct personal protective equipment safely and follow all safety procedures.
  • Lay the Damp Proof Course accurately by reading and following the working drawing.
  • Lay masonry wall units correctly according to the working drawing.
  • Construct bridging of walls to the required standard by following the working drawing.

These skills will help you build strong, safe, and durable walls that are essential in any construction project.

Compiled by: Rose Apiyo

Constructing superstructure walls is a fundamental stage in building development, providing the main vertical framework that supports floors, roofs, and finishes. This process demands careful attention to safety and material integrity to ensure durability and compliance with building standards. In Kenya, professionals working in diverse sectors such as county hospitals, educational institutions, and commercial banks must understand essential practices like the use of personal protective equipment and the installation of damp proof courses to prevent structural damage. Mastery of these elements enhances the quality and longevity of masonry walls in various construction projects.

7.1 PPEs

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is critical in masonry works to safeguard workers from potential hazards such as dust, falling debris, and sharp tools. In Kenya, adherence to PPE use is not only a safety measure but also a legal requirement under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA). Workers in environments like county government offices and retail business construction sites rely on PPE to reduce injury risks, maintain productivity, and ensure compliance with workplace safety regulations.

7.1.1 Types of PPE in Masonry Works

Different types of PPE serve specific protective functions during masonry operations. Understanding these categories enables workers to select appropriate equipment for various tasks, minimizing exposure to hazards.

Head Protection

Hard hats or helmets protect the head from falling objects, impacts, and electric shocks. For instance, at a university construction site, workers wear helmets to prevent injuries from accidental drops of bricks or tools.

Eye and Face Protection

Safety goggles and face shields guard against dust, flying particles, and chemical splashes. In a hospital construction project, goggles prevent cement dust from irritating workers’ eyes during mixing and laying mortar.

Hand Protection

Gloves made of leather or rubber protect hands from abrasions, cuts, and chemical irritants. Employees at a SACCO office renovation use gloves to handle sharp masonry tools and avoid skin contact with cement.

Foot Protection

Steel-toed boots shield feet from heavy falling objects and punctures. At a hotel construction site, these boots prevent injuries caused by dropped bricks or nails on the floor.

Respiratory Protection

Dust masks or respirators filter harmful dust and airborne particles. Workers in a retail business building site use dust masks during brick cutting and mixing to avoid respiratory problems.

7.1.2 Uses of PPE in Masonry Works

The correct use of PPE is essential for effective hazard mitigation. Each type of equipment has specific applications that contribute to worker safety during masonry activities.

Protection Against Falling Objects

Helmets are worn on all masonry sites, such as county referral hospitals, to prevent head injuries from bricks or tools accidentally dropped from scaffolding.

Prevention of Eye Injuries

Goggles are used when mixing cement or cutting bricks to shield eyes from harmful dust and debris, reducing the risk of eye irritation or damage.

Hand Safety During Handling

Gloves enable workers to safely handle rough bricks and sharp tools, preventing cuts and skin irritation from cement and mortar mixtures.

Foot Injury Prevention

Steel-toed boots protect feet when transporting heavy materials and moving around construction debris, common in university campus building projects.

Respiratory Health Maintenance

Dust masks are critical during dusty operations like brick cutting and mortar mixing, especially in enclosed spaces such as county government office renovations, preventing inhalation of harmful particles.

Practice Questions

  1. Explain the importance of using different types of PPE in masonry works and provide examples of where each is necessary. (10 marks)

  2. Describe how respiratory protective equipment helps maintain worker health on construction sites. (5 marks)

  3. List five types of PPE used in masonry works and explain the specific hazards each type protects against. (10 marks)

🔒7.2 Damp Proof Course

A Damp Proof Course (DPC) is a barrier installed in walls to prevent moisture from rising through capillary action. In Kenya's humid and rainy regions, the absence of an effective DPC can lead to damp walls, which compromise structural integrity and indoor air…

Masonry wall units form the fundamental building blocks of superstructure walls in construction projects across Kenya, from county government offices to university campuses. Selecting appropriate units and preparing mortar correctly ensure wall strength, durab…

🔒7.4 Bridging of walls

Bridging techniques such as arches and lintels are critical in masonry to span openings like doors and windows without compromising structural integrity. These elements distribute loads around openings, a vital consideration in buildings such as county governm…

Chapter Summary

This chapter covered essential aspects of constructing superstructure walls, beginning with personal protective equipment, where the types and appropriate uses were outlined to ensure safety on site. It then examined the damp proof course, explaining its purpose and the correct procedure for laying it to prevent moisture penetration. The chapter proceeded to discuss masonry wall units, focusing on the preparation of mortar and the proper techniques for laying the units to achieve structural integrity. Finally, the chapter addressed the bridging of walls, detailing the construction of arches and the installation of lintels as critical elements for supporting openings and distributing loads effectively. Together, these topics provide a comprehensive guide to building durable and safe masonry superstructures.
