⚑ What you will be able to do

By the end of this chapter, you will be able to:

  • Identify different methods of data collection that match your organisation’s goals.
  • Carry out sampling techniques correctly to gather useful data.
  • Present data clearly using tables, diagrams, and graphs that suit their purpose.

Compiled by: Bonface Omondi

Statistics is essential in professional settings across Kenya, enabling data-driven decisions in healthcare, education, finance, agriculture, and many other sectors. It provides tools to collect, analyze, and interpret data, helping institutions like county referral hospitals, universities, banks, and cooperatives improve their services and operations. Understanding statistics enhances the ability to manage resources, monitor performance, and forecast trends effectively.

4.1 Introduction: definitions and branches of statistics

Statistics involves collecting, organizing, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting data to make informed decisions. It is divided mainly into two branches: descriptive statistics, which summarizes data features, and inferential statistics, which draws conclusions about populations from samples.

4.1.2 Descriptive Statistics

Descriptive statistics summarizes and organizes data to describe its main features. Common measures include mean, median, mode, range, variance, and standard deviation.

4.1.3 Inferential Statistics

Inferential statistics uses sample data to make generalizations about a larger population. It involves hypothesis testing, estimation, and prediction based on probability theory.

4.1.4 Role of Statistics in Kenyan Professional Fields

Statistics supports decision-making in sectors such as healthcare for patient data analysis, education for student performance evaluation, agriculture for crop yield estimation, and finance for risk assessment.

Practice Questions

  1. Define statistics and explain its main branches. (5 marks)
  2. Describe three measures of central tendency used in descriptive statistics. (6 marks)
  3. Explain the difference between descriptive and inferential statistics with examples from a bank and a hospital. (9 marks)

🔒4.2 Methods of data collection

Collecting accurate data is fundamental to statistical analysis. Methods vary depending on the study objectives, resources, and population characteristics. Kenyan organizations such as county governments, universities, and retail businesses rely on appropriate…

🔒4.3 Presentation of data

In Kenyan professional environments across sectors such as healthcare, education, banking, and agriculture, effective presentation of data is essential for informed decision-making. Data presentation transforms raw numbers into visual or tabular formats that a…

Chapter Summary

This chapter introduced the fundamental concepts of statistics, including its definitions and the main branches that guide data analysis. It then explored various methods of data collection, distinguishing between primary data gathered firsthand and secondary data obtained from existing sources, as well as outlining different sampling techniques to ensure representative data selection. The chapter detailed how to effectively present data using tables, bar charts, and pie charts to summarize information clearly. It further examined graphical representations such as basic time series graphs, Z-charts, Lorenz curves, and semi-logarithmic graphs to analyze trends and distributions. Frequency distribution tables were explained as a means to organize data into classes, while histograms and frequency polygons were introduced as visual tools to depict data frequency. Lastly, the use of cumulative frequency curves, or ogives, was discussed to demonstrate how they help in understanding the accumulation of data values and their practical applications.

Written Assessment

  1. A county referral hospital collected data on the number of patients served each day for one week: 120, 135, 150, 140, 130, 145, 155. Calculate the mean number of patients served per day. (2 marks)

  2. A retail business surveyed 80 customers and found that 25 preferred product A, 30 preferred product B, and the rest preferred product C. Calculate the percentage of customers who preferred product C. (2 marks)
