3.1 Ruminant parasites

In Kenya’s diverse agro-ecological zones, ruminant parasites vary widely, encompassing internal and external species that impact animals differently. Understanding the classification, life cycles, and transmission methods of these parasites is crucial for designing targeted control programs. Extension officers must be familiar with the common parasites found in local herds and their economic and health implications.

3.1.1 Classification of ruminant parasites

Ruminant parasites are broadly classified into two main groups based on their habitat and mode of infestation within the host animal. Internal parasites, or endoparasites, live inside the animal’s body, primarily in the digestive tract, blood, or other organs. External parasites, or ectoparasites, infest the skin, hair, or external surfaces.

Internal parasites

  • Gastrointestinal nematodes: These roundworms, including Haemonchus, Trichostrongylus, and Ostertagia, inhabit the stomach and intestines, causing damage to the mucosa and leading to poor nutrient absorption. For instance, Haemonchus contortus is notorious in Kenyan sheep farms for causing anemia and death.
  • Liver flukes: Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica infect the liver and bile ducts, impairing liver function and causing weight loss. These parasites are prevalent in wetter regions such as Kisumu County.
  • Lungworms: Species such as Dictyocaulus viviparus target the respiratory system, leading to coughing and pneumonia, particularly in young calves.
  • Coccidia: Protozoan parasites like Eimeria species invade the intestinal lining, causing diarrhea and dehydration in lambs and kids.
  • Blood parasites: Trypanosomes transmitted by tsetse flies cause trypanosomiasis, a debilitating disease in ruminants mainly in Western Kenya.

External parasites

  • Ticks: Various species including Rhipicephalus and Amblyomma attach to the skin, feeding on blood and transmitting diseases such as East Coast fever. Ticks are a major concern for pastoralists in arid and semi-arid lands.
  • Lice: Chewing and sucking lice infest the coat, causing irritation, weight loss, and secondary infections.
  • Mites: Mange-causing mites burrow into the skin, leading to intense itching and skin lesions.
  • Flies: Biting flies such as tsetse and stable flies cause direct blood loss and act as vectors for disease transmission.
  • Fleas: Less common but still problematic, fleas cause irritation and may transmit other pathogens.

3.1.2 Life cycles and transmission of ruminant parasites

Knowledge of parasite life cycles is critical for timing control measures effectively. Most internal parasites have complex life cycles involving eggs passed in faeces, development in the environment, and ingestion by the host.

  • Direct life cycles: Parasites like gastrointestinal nematodes lay eggs in the host’s intestine; these eggs hatch into larvae in the pasture. The infective larvae are ingested during grazing, completing the cycle.
  • Indirect life cycles: Liver flukes require intermediate hosts such as freshwater snails. Eggs hatch into larvae that infect snails, later emerging as infective cercariae that attach to vegetation.
  • Vector-borne transmission: Blood parasites such as trypanosomes rely on vectors like tsetse flies for transmission between ruminants.
  • Environmental factors: Humidity, temperature, and pasture management influence the survival of free-living parasite stages. For example, heavy rains in Kericho create ideal conditions for liver fluke transmission.
  • Host factors: Young, pregnant, or immunocompromised ruminants are more susceptible to parasitic infections due to weaker immune responses.

3.1.3 Economic and health impact of ruminant parasites

Parasitic infections in ruminants cause significant economic losses through reduced productivity, treatment costs, and mortality. Extension professionals must quantify these impacts to advocate for investment in parasite control.

  • Reduced weight gain: Parasites compete for nutrients and damage the digestive tract, slowing growth rates in calves and lambs, which delays market readiness.
  • Decreased milk production: Infected dairy cows exhibit lower milk yields and quality, affecting household incomes and nutrition.
  • Poor reproduction: Parasites can cause infertility, abortions, and weak offspring, undermining herd sustainability.
  • Treatment expenses: Costs for anthelmintics, acaricides, and veterinary services strain smallholder farmers’ budgets.
  • Mortality: Severe infestations, especially in young animals, lead to high death rates, reducing herd size and future earnings.
  • Disease transmission: Parasites serve as vectors for diseases such as babesiosis and anaplasmosis, complicating herd health management.

3.1.4 Control and management strategies

Effective parasite control combines chemical, biological, and management practices tailored to local conditions and parasite species.

  • Strategic deworming: Administering anthelmintics based on parasite life cycles and grazing patterns minimizes resistance and maximizes efficacy.
  • Pasture rotation: Moving animals between pastures breaks parasite life cycles by reducing exposure to infective larvae.
  • Improved nutrition: Well-nourished animals have stronger immunity to resist infections.
  • Use of resistant breeds: Indigenous Kenyan breeds such as the Red Maasai sheep show natural resistance to some parasites.
  • Biological control: Introducing natural predators or fungi that attack parasite larvae can reduce pasture contamination.
  • Hygiene and sanitation: Regular cleaning of animal housing reduces ectoparasite habitats and environmental contamination.
